What is Breastfeeding Together?

Breastfeeding Together is a charity which was set up in 2015, providing positive peer support to families from pregnancy to early years and beyond, across Wigan Borough.

Fiona, who is a peer supporter and also does admin for the organisation, tells us more about what they do and how they help pregnant people & parents.

“Our office is in Wigan Investment Centre and we run groups all across the Wigan Borough, we are trying to spread the provisions as wide as we can to reach as many families as possible.

“We run sessions in community spaces across the borough and all sessions are free of charge, and you can just drop in, no need to book.

“We want to be as flexible as possible so that both families with new babies and parents of older babies/children can come along.”

Here’s some of the things that Breastfeeding Together have to offer

“We are on the wards at Bolton Hospital to support families and we run pregnancy and parenting Zoom sessions.

“We have different types of training, including Breastfeeding Peer Supporter Training, Breastfeeding Awareness and Breastfeeding Training for Businesses scheme.

“We do education sessions for schools and colleges and have a live online chat in the evening 7-10pm which covers out of hours provision for families when traditional services might not be as available.”

To raise some funds, Breastfeeding Together has a shop which sells new handmade items as well as a selection of their own merchandise.

“Some of the items available are handmade baby items, personalised keepsakes, Breastfeeding Together branded merchandise, infant feeding support resources and much more.

The volunteers at Breastfeeding Together

“We are all women who want to support parents and professionals. We strive to be as inclusive as possible, everything we do is tailored to the family that we support, whether they are breastfeeding, chestfeeding or giving breastmilk in another way.

“We have an amazing team of over 50 volunteers, they are fantastic and are a big part of what we do.

“We always have room for volunteers and for people who want to learn about peer support through our training please get in touch if you are interested.’
